Care Tips for Kokedama

Kokedama (“moss ball”) is a beautiful, minimalist way to grow indoor plants. With the right light and watering style, it will thrive for years.

Light

Different plants have different needs, but most kokedama prefer:

  • Bright, indirect light

  • Avoid direct sunlight on the moss — it dries out quickly

  • Low-light varieties (ferns, pothos, philodendron, ivy) do great in softer light

If you’re unsure, bright indirect light is always the safest choice.

Watering

Kokedama need deeper, more occasional watering compared to regular potted plants.

The Dunk Method (Best)

  1. Fill a bowl with room-temperature water.

  2. Place the kokedama in the bowl.

  3. Let it soak for 10–15 minutes until fully saturated.

  4. Remove and gently squeeze excess water from the moss (don’t crush the ball).

  5. Allow it to drip-dry before rehanging or placing it back on its dish.

How Often to Water

  • 1–2 times per week in warm or dry months

  • Every 1–2 weeks in cooler months

  • Water when the kokedama feels noticeably lighter or the moss feels dry

Plants that love moisture (ferns, ivy) need more frequent watering.

Humidity

  • Kokedama love humidity!

  • Mist the moss lightly a few times a week, especially indoors with AC/heat.

  • Bathrooms, kitchens, or near a humidifier are ideal spots.

Placement

  • Hang or display on a shallow dish or stand.

  • Keep away from heating vents, radiators, drafts, or strong afternoon sun.

  • If hanging, make sure the string/support is secure after watering.

Moss Care

  • If the moss fades or dries out, mist it or give it a short soak.

  • Some browning over time is normal—trim loose pieces if desired.

Fertilizing (Optional)

  • Add a few drops of balanced liquid fertilizer to the water once a month in spring/summer.

  • Do not over-fertilize; kokedama hold nutrients longer than normal pots.

Troubleshooting

My moss is drying out

  • Water more often or increase humidity.

My plant leaves are yellowing

  • Overwatering — allow longer gaps between soaks.

My plant leaf tips are crispy

  • Air is too dry → mist more or relocate to higher humidity.

My plant is droopy

  • Usually underwatering — give a long, full soak.
