I've always loved to bake. In my 20s, my friend Pam and I started an annual Christmas cookie day - we'd bake dozens of different recipes and share them with everyone we knew. I kept that tradition going with my own kids through my 30s and 40s, teaching them that baking is about more than just food - it's about gathering, sharing, and making something with your hands.

When my youngest, Jianna, was a Girl Scout, we had a dream: renovate the old building out back that had been my father-in-law's electrical business (it still says "Wye Electric" above the bakery door) and turn it into a commercial kitchen. We got our NC Department of Agriculture home kitchen processor permit and the troop started baking to fund their Girl Scout adventures -- trips to California, the Grand Canyon, and Belize.

After: Our Kitchen!
In July 2022, with the baking for scouts completed, Jianna and I made our dream official, and Rabble and Rise Baking Co. was born. We chose the name and worked on the logo during our annual family trip to Ocracoke. At the time, we were a Gen X mom and teenage daughter who've been called rabble-rousers on more than one occasion. We start to make good things happen in our community, even when it requires some rabble-rousing. And that's really what yeast does in bread -- it riles up flour and water to create bread. Thus our name, Rabble and Rise Baking Co.

Jianna left for college at UNC Chapel Hill in August 2024, where she is studying to become an enthobiologist and professor. That same month, we got the kitchen reinspected and upgraded to a commercial kitchen and retail bakery. I've been running Rabble and Rise on my own since then, and I've expanded the menu significantly.
In 2026, I semi-retired from my first entrepreneurial love, my training and coaching business called Nonprofit Marketing Guide. That's created more time to invest in my current passion: being a part of a growing community of local food producers, creating better options to feed our neighbors.
In Feburary, I decided to simplify our logo and do a small brand refresh. My oldest, Ava, redrew our illustrated logo as a simple line drawing for me, making it more versatile.

I'm also working on some additions to the business:
-
I plan to start opening the kitchen for regular hours on Wednesday afternoons, to supplement our regular Saturdays at the Lexington Farmers Market.
-
I plan to work with more wholesalers to deliver other high-quality NC products that complement ours to our community.
-
I'll invest more time into another joy of mine: creating mossy terrariums and other simple but elegant houseplant designs through Rabble and Rise Botanica.
Thank you for coming along on the journey!
